“Yoshi’s Crafted World” is a platform and side-scrolling video game (for the Nintendo Switch) that came out March 29. It was first shown in the 2017 E3 (The Electronic Entertainment Expo), and was expected to come out in 2018, but was delayed to 2019.

The Yoshis live on an island with the sunstone, a powerful artifact rumored to “make your wildest dreams come true.” One day Kamek and Baby Bowser (the antagonists who reappear throughout the series) decide to steal the sunstone, which resulted in the gems flying off and scattering across the world. It’s now your job to go retrieve these gems and restore peace to the island.

The game is a basic Yoshi game with the usual actions of swallowing enemies, ground pounding and hover running. You have the ability to fire eggs off into the background, but most of the time it’s not necessary.

I’ll be honest, I expected a bit more from the game. With the great graphics and the shifting perspectives, I thought it could be pretty interesting, but I was sadly mistaken. At the beginning, the levels can feel decently fun and interesting, but after the first boss (a stronger opponent meant to challenge you) it felt like a chore to play. I was trying so hard to enjoy it, but I couldn’t. Levels felt claustrophobic and I would continuously confuse obstacles as the background. With all this the game did have a few shining moments: I enjoyed some fights with the bosses and some of the interactives in the background like throwing eggs at ladders to make them accessible.

It’s almost like Nintendo tried to do something like “Breath of the Wild,” where you take it slow and get to go at your own pace, but “Yoshi’s Crafted World” just couldn’t live up to the new set standard. The game just feels too slow to progress naturally.

All in all, it’s an OK game to play if you have nothing better to do but I would recommend something different, especially for the price ($59.99), like “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.” If you’re thinking about getting this game, do yourself a favor and wait until the price lowers or you can find it pre-owned at Gamestop.
